Are police cars only able to be driven by cops or can they for example let their spouse drive their car too?

Is it allowed for a cop to let someone else drive his or her police car, or is that not permitted because of the equipment inside and the possibility of maybe misusing the car (like running red lights) or whatever. Just curious...Are police cars only able to be driven by cops or can they for example let their spouse drive their car too?
Our insurance carrier does not allow it. You must be a member of the department.





We do have one exception, our department has a Citizens Academy, to familiarize citizens with the police department's mission. We do a class on emergency operation, and set up an obstacle course in a parking lot for the members of the class, but it is off the road and supervised.Are police cars only able to be driven by cops or can they for example let their spouse drive their car too?
I run my daily errands in my boyfriends cruiser all the time. I get done alot faster because I throw the lights and sirens on!!

We have take home rides and the answer is NO. I have a modified 4x4 that I own outright but lease to the dept. for off highway use when there is a need and my wife can't even drive that.
The answer will depend on the state, however here in Washington you must be specifically licensed to operate an emergency vehicle.
Yeah, generally the cruiser is for the officer. BUT that is up to department policy.

In Calif, you don't have to be licensed to operate a LE vehicle (ambulance and fire truck- yes). But for a LE vehicle, there's a degree of liability.... if they're driving the police car, the public is expecting a LE officer to be driving - not joe citizen. If they need emergency assistance, they need to know that an officer is in the car. And generally, joe citizen doesn't have the vehicle training.
